I am surrounded…by mountains!

I know that I haven’t blogged in a while. I tripped and fell in Kensington Market and sprained my thumb, making all things writing virtually impossible and painful. This forced me to relax a little bit but it also threw me into a kind of tailspin – where I felt that my head was disconnected from my body…well not literally of course, but there was definitely a knowing that I was quite off my game. I was making a ton of mistakes at work – which isn’t good when you really need to be “on your game.” It certainly has given me pause about the things we might do to ourselves.

I think that I was so nervous about coming here, that I found myself in a scenerio where I not only injured myself so I couldn’t write, but that when I did write, it was mediocre and fairly boring.

But now that I am here, I see that anyone that I have talked to has the same hangups and misconceptions about their own work that I do. Those same feelings of mediocrity creep up on them too.

I am registered in the Writing for Children section of the programme. We had a meet and greet with wine this evening. I met a few people from the other sections as well as the people in our course. There are 8 of us in the group. I only had the chance to really speak to two people. It turns out that one of them is from Montreal – so we instantly bonded. She also loves “Rilla of Ingleside” so we are kindred spirits. 🙂 The other was in the same journalism class that a friend of mine took in Winnipeg a couple of years ago. For such a large country, Canada can be quite small.

The author running the session was late so I didn’t get a chance to meet him yet. Tomorrow is orientation and then our first session. I am looking forward to walking around the area.

Banff is as gorgeous as they say. I will try and remember to take some pictures tomorrow. Each mountain crevice has its own personality. I feel as if they are all hovering around me – giving me a little “you go girl” hug.

I am exhausted, so I think that I will go against my nature and go to sleep. Although in my real world of Toronto it is almost midnight, the sun has just set in Banff and it is not quite 10PM. But after a day of travelling, I think that I do.
