On the 75th Anniversary of Maud’s Death…A Reflection

Seventy-five years ago today, on the 24 of April 1942, Maud died in her home, “Journey’s End,” on Riverside Drive in Toronto’s west end or Swansea Village. While the home is currently a private residence, there is a plaque in a park nearby commemorating the street. Today, CBC Books has compiled, 75 facts you might now know about Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery and #20th is Maud! They had also asked me for some “fun facts” of my own, which are also included. As you know, Maud kept a journal her whole life, but the last Read More

Fun Facts About Maud: Mel in Cavendish

One of the best parts about writing historical fiction is doing the research. I love discovering things that maybe people haven’t, or see something in a new way. Maud had been very careful about what she left behind. She burned her correspondence, so the only letters we have are the ones other people, like her best friend and cousin Penzie, and her two pen pals Ephraim Weber and G.B. MacMillan kept. Over the years, I visited the L.M. Montgomery sites and archives, exploring what she left behind. This helped me to connect to Maud, her time Read More

Happy 150th Birthday, Bess!

I have known Laura Ingalls Wilder since I was seven years old when my parents purchased the entire set for me for my birthday. (I wonder what happened to both of these things.) At first I didn’t know what it was and my mother had to explain Read More

Mel’s Week of Unplanned Symmetry

The writer life is weird and wonderful. One week there could be a series of events converging at the same time and you try believing in your incredible luck and the next…a silence so quiet that you wonder if you’re any good and why you’re bothering to do it in the first place. This week was a lucky week. A grateful week. A week where I’m doing my best to celebrate success, without feeling guilty and also being comfortable with being out in the world. TUESDAY: I talked about this and my path to publication on Read More
